Welcome
to Greenbank Bed & Breakfast Located just a short drive from Salisbury, Greenbank offers a contemporary style en suite ground floor accommodation, ample off road parking and a warm welcome from your hosts Sue & Paul who will ensure your that stay will be a relaxing and pleasurable experience. Its location is a quiet haven in which to unwind from the days events and an ideal base camp from which you can explore a wealth of interesting places in and around Wessex plus walking, cycling and fishing in the surrounding countryside
The house itself is centrally located in the village of Bowerchalke at the upper end of the picturesque Chalke Valley which is part of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Accommodation on
offer is two non smoking en suite double rooms complete with freeview televisions,
radio/alarm clocks, tea and coffee making facilities and WiFi / Internet coverage. Guests also have use of a fridge and their own
conservatory / lounge where they have access to indoor
and outdoor games, magazines, items of local interest and a CD player.
Regrettably no pets allowed, except for assistance dogs. Payment can be by
Credit/Debit Card or Cash. Cards accepted are American Express, Master Card,
Maestro As the pictures show we have a large mature garden that has various seating areas where you can sit back, relax and take in the tranquil surroundings. In the summer, weather permitting breakfast can be served on the patio. A full English breakfast is available along with healthy alternatives. For lunches and evening meals there are a number of good traditional country pubs nearby serving excellent food. For details of these pubs or other eating places, your hosts Sue & Paul will be only to happy to advise and if you wish book a table for you. However if guests wish to eat in with a takeaway meal our Breakfast Room facility is available for this purpose. small village it has some notable attributes in that it has been home to the
Nobel Prize winning author William
Golding, Gaia Theorist Prof James Lovelock and
Poet Siegfried
Sassoon. William Golding is also buried in the village churchyard. From
1878 to 1924 the village had its own newspaper the cheapest ever printed in
England as it sold for a farthing and was published by the vicar the Rev
Edward Collett. A book about the Bowerchalke Parish Papers by Rex Sawyer was
first published in 1989. The Doomsday Book refers to this area as the Manor of Chelke and it was not until 1225 that the name Burchelke first appeared, then over the next six hundred & fifty years transmuted into its current pronunciation of Bowerchalke Further back in history
prior to the
Roman occupation of Britain the Cranbourne Chase was inhabited by a Celtic tribe called
the Durotriges
and legend has it that the Bowerchalke hamlet of Woodminton was the site of a
battle between them and Augusta's second legion commanded by Vespasian circa
AD43. The battle was fought at a place known locally as Patty’s Bottom and legend has it that on certain moonlight nights tramping is distinctly heard and headless horses can be seen rushing madly about.
